“After reaching into a wasp nest, I wanted to create an improved patio umbrella that allows you to easily access the crank handle when opening the umbrella. My design also enables you to inspect the underside of the umbrella before placing your hand underneath to crank the handle. No need to risk unseen critters or insect nests. Also for taller folks, no need to bend over backwards to find the handle." David Niemeyer.

- Would consist of a patio umbrella that would feature a zipper incorporated between the ribs measuring 2 to 3 feet long and 1 to 2 inches wide
- The user would simply open the zipper and would insert his/her hand inside
- The individual could then use the crank handle to open the closed umbrella
- The zipper could also be used to inspect the underside of the umbrella for insects, nesting, etc., prior to placing a hand inside
- This umbrella could be produced in a multitude of colors, patterns, styles, and designs
